‘SO MANY THINGS REMAIN UNWRITTEN’: AUTOGRAPH MANUSCRIPTS OF FRYDERYK CHOPIN’S LETTERS AT THE CHOPIN MUSEUM.

Temporary Exhibition

20 May–30 June 2018

On 20 May, the Fryderyk Chopin Museum will open a temporary exhibition presenting autograph manuscripts of the Polish composer’s letters acquired for the Museum’s collections in the past few years. The event is of extraordinary character – some of the letters have never before been publicly exhibited or published. The exhibition will not only introduce us to the composer, but also permit us to gain insight into the era in which Chopin lived and composed.

The exhibition includes twelve of the most interesting epistolary objects acquired for the Fryderyk Chopin Museum from 2011 to 2017 via auction houses, at international antique shops and from private individuals. All of the letters are accompanied by a description of the context in which they were written, as well as a transliteration of the writing that will permit viewers to acquaint themselves with the original, unedited content. The autographs are examples of both official and private correspondence of the composer. Among them, we shall find letters to well-known musicians and music publishers of the time, but also very personal messages to such friends of Chopin as Wojciech Grzymała and Julian Fontana.

The exhibition also touches upon conservation aspects, resulting from the peculiarities of 19th-century paper documents, which influence their storage and accessibility. Using one of the letters as an example, the complexity of the research material represented by the manuscript itself in the sense of a museum object – from the perspective of its substance, provenance and content – is shown.

The autograph manuscripts presented at the exhibition are only a tiny part of the Chopin Museum’s collections. Rarely, however – on account of conservator’s recommendations – can they be viewed in such substantial numbers.
