On 28 September, in collaboration with the Royal Łazienki Museum, The Fryderyk Chopin Institute will present an exhibition entitled The Fryderyk Chopin International Piano Competitions, 1927–2015 at the Łazienki Open-Air Gallery, the aim of which is to introduce viewers to the history of this extraordinary event. The exhibition will open the day before the commencement of the now 17th edition of the Competition.

The 16 Chopin Competitions to date are presented in a selection of historical photographs showing the pianists, jury and audience. The history of al. of the editions, beginning with 1927, will be introduced in interviews with participants, jurors and the press, as well as reviews from the music community, which will illustrate changes in the perception of the ideal interpretation of Fryderyk Chopin’s music, and are often a testimony to transformations in the broader sociocultural context. The quotes will be accompanied by information concerning the number of applications sent in, the countries and expected age range of the participants, which permits one to discern worldwide interest in the Chopin Competition already from its first editions. The special atmosphere, the event’s high standing and the strong emotions accompanying the participants’ efforts are visible in nearly every document presented at the exhibition, which introduces the history of the world’s most important music competition.


The exhibition at the Royal Łazienki Museum Open-Air Gallery will be on display until 16 October 2015. The exhibition’s organizers are: The Fryderyk Chopin Institute and the Royal Łazienki Museum.
