At the Parish Church of the Assumption in Izbica Kujawska, a commemorate plaque installed for the 230th anniversary of the birth of Fryderyk Chopin’s mother, Justyna Chopin, née Krzyżanowska, was ceremoniously blessed by Reverend Leonard Fic.

The marble plaque, bearing a portrait of Fryderyk Chopin’s mother, carries the inscription ‘Baptised in this church on 14 September 1782 was the mother of Fryderyk Chopin, Tekla Justyna Krzyżanowska, daughter of Jakub and Antonina, née Kołomińska. On the 230th anniversary, from the community of Izbica’.

The solemnities were accompanied by a lecture given by Piotr Mysłakowski, an eminent genealogist of the Chopin family, who outlined the story of Justyna Chopin’s life, from the years spent in Cuiavia, through her time at Żelazowa Wola, to the half a century with her family in Warsaw.

It is worth remembering that Piotr Mysłakowski, together with Andrzej Sikorski, is also the author of Fryderyk Chopin. The Origins – a book devoted to the origins and lives of Chopin’s parents, as well as their close and distant families, friends and acquaintances. The authors succeeded in verifying, explaining and often refuting the legends and fabrications that hold sway in the Chopin literature and are still repeated in popular and scholarly biographies of the composer. More information on this book can be found on the Fryderyk Chopin Institute website, at NIFC – KSIĄŻKI

The ceremony in Izbica Kujawska took place under the honorary patronage of the Marshal of the Cuiavia-Pomerania Voivodeship and the patronage of the Mayor of Izbica Kujawska. The organisers were the Parish of the Assumption and the ‘General Augustyn Słubicki’ Gymnasium, with the cooperation of the Parents’ Committee.
